As we move through 2026, many of Long Island’s water providers continue to report that local tap water “meets or exceeds all federal and state standards.” While this statement is technically accurate, it doesn’t always tell the full story about Long Island water quality.

Large underground plumes of 1,4-dioxane contamination on Long Island have been linked to historical industrial activity, including the well-known Bethpage/Grumman plume. Unlike many other contaminants, 1,4-dioxane is extremely difficult to remove using conventional municipal water treatment methods.
Because of its persistence and potential health risks, New York has established one of the strictest regulatory limits for 1,4-dioxane in drinking water in the United States. However, addressing existing contamination remains a long-term challenge.
